Laptop the first - a Lenovo x270 with a dual-core i7-7600U and 8GB RAM. Not that his software was literally the lifeblood of the company or anything, without which they'd be uncompetitive and probably bankrupt already. Thankfully they listened to us.Ī friend of mine used to be an in-house-software developer for a bank - and they gave him only a basic laptop to develop on and he was constantly hitting limitations of RAM or CPU trying to work on it, because the company was reluctant to spend more on developer machines over actual money making departments. I'm a game developer, and at the start of Covid when less techy higher ups asked about laptops for WFH as something to develop on, we had to say it wasn't really feasible and cheaper laptops with remote access to workstations that were kept in the office was a far more sensible use of money. It's best to check with your developers on how long an iteration cycle is taking them and how much it could be improved by better hardware. If it's compiled and a big codebase, you'll need more cores/RAM. That depends on what you're developing, of course.
